A 4-channel amp powers your front and rear speakers, with the option to bridge two channels for a subwoofer. A monoblock powers only a subwoofer. If you are adding only bass, a monoblock is simpler.
If you want to upgrade your whole system, a 4-channel amp gives you more flexibility.
Will a budget amplifier drain my car battery?
A 500-watt RMS amplifier draws about 40-50 amps. Most alternators can handle this as long as the engine is running and you are not using other high-draw accessories. If you play music at high volume with the engine off, the battery will drain quickly.
A capacitor or upgraded alternator is only needed for systems over 800 watts RMS.
Do I need special wiring for a car amplifier?
Yes. You need a power wire (8 AWG for up to 600W RMS, 4 AWG for higher), a ground wire, RCA cables, speaker wire, and a fuse holder. Most budget amps do not include these, so budget an extra $30-60 for a quality installation kit.
A solid ground connection is critical to prevent alternator whine and noise.
